Young and Republican?

Give this group a chance

By PAUL J.M. STEBBINS JR.

This is a reminder that the next meeting of the Young Republicans of Luzerne County will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 at The Woodlands Inn & Resort, Parlor B.
I would really like to take my time and offer this as an open invitation for all registered Republicans, ages 18 to 40, to come and see what this group is about. I know that some may think that these meetings could be intimidating if you do not know anyone who is involved.

But I assure you that these meetings are the most laid-back gatherings you will take part in. We welcome everyone from those who are just starting to get involved in politics to those who have made it one of their favorite hobbies.

It is a chance to help educate each other with our views and really get to know other individuals.
I know we all lead busy lives -- and sometimes the last thing you want to remember is that you have a meeting but I promise that by the end of the night you will feel more like you spent the time hanging out with friends than attending a formal meeting.

I can say that there are people in the group whom I personally didn't know but had heard about. I now know them and am glad to say that in May I couldn't have picked better candidates to be on our state committee or to call friends. These are the relationships we hope to foster among our group with the exciting chance to network with professionals as well.
There are lots of interesting events that we have lined up and having more people involved would help us make them a success.

If you feel like you might be nervous and want to feel more comfortable then see if you know any of the people on our friends list on Facebook and come to the meeting with them.

We all have a mission to advance the Republican Party in our county and to do that we must participate as well. The disadvantage that we have will not be easy to overcome but it will be overcome.

Wouldn't you feel more proud knowing you were a part of that REAL change?
Thanks and I hope to see you there on Aug. 17 Feel free to message me anytime on Facebook about the meeting and I will get back to you as soon as possible.READ MORE ABOUT THE YOUNG REPUBLICANS

New State Committee Member Harry Haas meets former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum at Friday night's Summer Dinner in Hershey. Santorum delivered a rousing speech to Pennsylvania Republicans gathered for the two-day event at the Hershey Lodge & Resort.

State GOP united behind ticket

By HARRY HAAS

HERSHEY  -- The 2010 Pennsylvania Republican State Committee Summer Meeting was held in Hershey June 11-12 and the tone of the weekend was positive and upbeat.

Of the 359 committeemen and women from throughout the state, more than 80 were newly elected.

Friday's agenda dealt primarily with trainings: a county executive director meeting, new member orientation, 2010 Victory briefing, new majority forum, and voter registration instruction.

Those of us able to attend divided up the schedule and got a great sample of how we plan to elect Republicans who will restore conservative government. Friday night concluded with a speech by Congressman Darrrell Issa of California regarding his committee's investigation into the Obama administration's job-swapping scandal. His main point: Prepare for more news in the weeks to come.

The keynote address was given by former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.  As a student of history, I have seen footage of many remarkable historical speeches.

Sen. Santorum's was one of our generation's finest. His words struck to the core of why we fight so fiercely to maintain our American freedom and ideals. There was not a single peep as our attention gravitated toward words that offered real hope and change.

Our county committee members had breakfast with others from the Northeast Central Regional caucus with neighboring counties on Saturday morning.

The official state meeting saw an attendance rate of almost 90 percent, and Robert Gleason, the chairman of the state party, celebrated the turnout. He demonstrated the party's openness by inviting all Republicans everywhere to visit the state headquarters building in downtown Harrisburg, and he even offered his personal cell phone number!

As the weekend wrapped up, we saw data that shows Pat Toomey ahead in nearly all polls in his race for Senate, many optimistic congressional hopefuls poised to take back the House, and the gubernatorial team of Jim Cawley for lieutenant and Tom Corbett for governor blasting rivals in every poll by a large margin.

Fellow Republicans of Luzerne County can join in the momentum by checking in with any of your state committee representatives, the county headquarters in downtown Wilkes-Barre, and the state party at its WEBSITE.

Pierogies, potato pancakes & politics

One of the best ways you can help our slate of candidates is to take them to a neighborhood event.

Our nominees are trying to get around to as many bazaars, festivals and other summertime events as possible. They stand a better chance of meeting more people if someone from the neighborhood, host parish or committee would spend some time introducing them to voters.

If you'd like to help, or suggest an event, e-mail us at lcgop@luzernegop.org and we'll help make the connection.

We will post our community events calendar on this Web site. Check it regularly for updates or suggest a few of your own. The candidates will appreciate it.

Support Our Candidates

Over the next five months, our candidates for federal and state offices will be hosting rallies, fundraisers and other events. They need your help.

Whether you would like to volunteer to help out at one of the events, sell tickets or attend a fundraiser -- or even host one, your donation of money and time is greatly appreciated.

The road will be much easier for our Republican candidates if many people help out, even just for a little.

Bill Goldsworthy, who is seeking the state representative seat in the 120th Legislative District, will hold a golf tournament on Sept. 3. Sponsors and golfers are signing up now.

For more information on these events, check this Web site regularly.

You can find COMING EVENTS on the home page, listings on the CALENDAR page.
