Toohil addresses

Young GOP

at July meeting

Submitted by HARRY HAAS

The July meeting of the Luzerne County Young Republicans came to order with the following in attendance: P.J. Stebbins, Frank Mazza, Bob Zaruta, Tarah Toohil, Jason Harris, Danny Cook, Steve D, Nicole Rave, and Harry Haas.

Guest Speaker was Toohil, state representative candidate and Young Republicans member. She answered questions. Holding a fundraiser is greatest priority.

Old Business
  --Adopt a Highway:
Contingent on receiving our official charter.
 --Charter
Dan passed on Jeff's findings: 15 people neeeded for a charter; would be nice to be 20-25; Next Meeting's homework:  bring at least one new person.  Frank has researched the website; he also stressed the need for personal connections to bring out newcomers.
--Book Swap and YR Library at HQ:
Book shelf has been donated and four print resources are available.  The vision is to swap books with each other in order to equip us to dialogue about current events and policies. Drop off old books with your name inside the front cover; pick up books to read.  Sign your name before you return them.

Communications
Bob helped out at Rick Arnold's appearance at 4th of July parade in Mountaintop; word was sent out through facebook to get more potential volunteers.
  --Local Candidate needs:
See appendices for more information
  --Upcoming YR meetings:
*YR National Federation meeting in Washington DC July 15-18  (visit

YR Job Training Event
Many thanks to Bob Z, who printed out an outline "The Secrets to Obtaining Employment," and distributed copies  to group members. He stressed the need to develop a politically free mission statement.  PJ will contact LCCC.  Harry will put the plea out to Republican businessmen who could volunteer skills or time to speak at the event.

We will created a handout of skills for the event.  Time is ambiguous, but will play out as we partner with other groups who have done this in the past.

Jason found through PA Career Link that their main push is in April.  King's break is Oct. 14-16, which could be a good time for them.  Several members saw the November election as a priority and felt that job training event should be after that.  We still need to talk with arena.  Danny will call McCann School of Business for more info.

YR partnership in Wine Tasting with other Republican entities
Bartoli Winery would take care of planning.  Discussion about other groups doing wine-tasting event in the past and linking into their experience.  Dan will look into more.  No action taken.

Interim Leadership & Fall Reorganization
Harry explained to newcomers that election of officers will happen after the November election; Frank is well versed in Robert's Rules of Order which will be an asset.

College Outreach
Danny C went through websites, left message with Wilkes (Mark Stein contact), Scranton Republicans on the radar, Nikki said president graduated at Kings, Jason’s wife went to Marywood...will look into dialogue there.  Priority should be on having a manned table during opening days of each county college/university.

County GOP could supply campaign material and general info like the “Statement of Principles” cards.

Other
Jeff will look into participating in a marathon to raise funds for our organization.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, August 17...Woodlands 7pm.

Adjournment at 9:36.
