Toomey pays visit

U.S. Senatorial candidate Pat Toomey, who is leading his Democratic challenger in all polls, made a stop in Kingston on Monday, Aug. 23.

Toomey, of Lehigh County, visited with a gathering of supporters and members of the media at the Pierce Street Deli as part of his Summer Jobs Bus Tour.

Toomey was accompanied by his wife Kris and three children -- Bridget, Patrick and Duncan.

Painting the town red

Downtown Pittston turned red on Saturday -- and it had nothing to do with tomatoes.

Republican candidates, led by Attorney General Tom Corbett, our gubernatorial nominee, created quite a buzz at the annual Pittston Tomato Festival Parade.

Also participating were Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta, candidate for the 11th Congressional District; Luzerne County Commissioner Stephen A. Urban, running for the State Senate; and West Pittston Mayor Bill Goldsworthy, candidate for State Representative.

Later, Tom Corbett stopped by Luzerne County GOP Headquarters in Wilkes-Barre where about 50 volunteers had gathered for a "Super  Saturday" phone bank.

Boehner stumps in area

for Marino, Barletta

U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio was in the area Saturday to stump for our two congressional candidates, Lou Barletta and Tom Marino.

Boehner, who would be a frontrunner for Speaker of the House should Republicans take control in November, greeted a crowd of Barletta supporters in Bloomsburg Saturday morning when he appeared with the Hazleton mayor. Barletta is running for the 11th Congressional seat.

Boehner, who is traveling through 30 states on a bus to campaign for Republican congressional candidates, appeared at a fundraiser in the Back Mountain for Marino. Marino is running for the 10th Congressional District seat.

The Party of `No?' I Never Knew

By Morgan M. Harding

In recent television commercials, it seems that the Republican Party has a nickname other than the good old GOP -- The Party of "No."

The question is, why is it now that the party received this new name? Is it because of the party line voting of the last year? Or maybe it’s because of the intense questioning of the two appointees to the position of Supreme Court Justice?

But is it possible that this is just the latest in a long history of defensive slam tactics, intended to push the public eye away from the President’s ever slipping approval ratings and the unpopular policies he and his liberal colleagues in the House and Senate keep trying to push on us.

Party line voting is nothing new and the Republican Party is not the only party guilty of this act. How often do Democrats in Congress or Senators vote with the Republican Party? I would say that this type of voting is 50/50.

This being said, when President Bush was in office, did the Democrats not fight appointments and question them to make sure they were the best choices? I think so.

Everyone goes on the defensive when they are in jeopardy of losing something of value. So should it come as a shock that only a few short months away from a major mid-term election where many Republican candidates are expected to win seats currently held by Democrats that this new negative nickname is unleashed?

While in the game of politics, the perception and appearances of a party and its candidates do indeed effect the outcomes at times, is a nickname that can just as easily be applied to the other party the best defense? I think not.

O'Connor meets old pal

Hannity at Freedom Concert

Terrence O'Connor, Republican candidate for State Representative, 118th District, took in Friday's Freedom Concert at Six Flags Great Adventure Park in Jackson, N.J., on Friday. While there, O'Connor caught up with his old scholastic baseball teammate Sean Hannity. Hannity, the popular radio and television personality, hosts the Freedom Concert series which supports scholarships for the children of fallen soldiers. Friday's concert featured appearances by Newt Gingrich and Col. Oliver North, along with musical performances by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band and Michael W. Smith.
